A Bartholin's gland, also known as a "greater vestibular gland" and "vulvovaginal gland," is located on both sides of the vaginal opening. They produce mucous that may lubricate the vulva, but their exact function is unknown. They may become plugged resulting in inflammation and pain, bartholinitis. In chronic bartholinitis, cysts may form. When inflamed, these glands can make intercourse painful or impossible. I recommend seeing a doctor to find the cause and possible prevention.
