Question: I have a concern and I am too embarrassed to ask anybody. I think my mons pubis is very large and 'puffy'. I feel self-conscious and hate to wear pants/jeans I fear it looks like there is a penis under there or something. My clitoris is very small and labia are very small/tidy. It is just a 'puffy' pubic mound. Is there something wrong with me? I am very self-conscious about it even during sex with my husband.
Also, when I shaved my bikini line the hair is now on the top of my legs inside, further than normal. About 1-2cm. If I shave again will this continue to grow down my leg I am scared it will end up and my knees or something. Is it normal for pubic hair to spread? I do not have a great deal of hair; it is a very light coverage of hair on my pubic bone almost like a child. I am nearly 28.
Answer: They call the female pubic mound the "Mons Veneris." Mons Veneris means "Mountain of Love" in Latin. The fatty tissue covering the female pubic bone is sensitive to estrogen, and as a result, during puberty it can become quite pronounced. It is obvious when a woman wears tight form fitting clothing, such as swimsuits and leotards. I would expect men and women to find your prominent mound enticing, rather than repulsive, so show it off.
The pelvic bones may also form a very prominent pubic mound, as demonstrated in some of the photos on this page. Some of the women shown obviously have very little body fat, to the prominence is solely the result of their bone structure.
Contrary to popular myth, shaving does not increase hair growth. Short hair is just more ridged and less tapered at the ends. It looks and feels coarser. The amount of body hair increases with age, in both men and women. I suspect the increased amount of pubic hair is normal and not a cause for concern. It may be that as a result of shaving, and looking at the area, you are more aware of the hair. If you should notice a marked increase in body hair then consult a doctor, to see if your hormone levels are out of balance.
