In the photograph shown above a thick ring of hymeneal tissue is visible, as indicated by the light pink edges of the tissue (inside the black circle); I believe the woman has engaged in vaginal intercourse. In some women this remaining hymeneal tissue impairs vaginal penetration, or causes pain when objects are inserted into the vagina. In a very small percentage of women minor surgery is necessary to remove this barrier to penetration and pleasurable intercourse.
