Question: I am feeling a little desperate. I am 37 years old. While taking Zyban to quit smoking I suddenly started feeling very sexual, bought a vibrator called the Rabbit and was able to bring myself to organism for the first time ever. I masturbated every night for about 3 weeks. By which time I had stopped taking Zyban. Now I find that I am unable to reach orgasm. All I seem to be doing is urinating. I don't think that I am having a female ejaculation because the amount of liquid involved, smell and the sensation definitely feels like peeing, and I suppose now, having had an orgasm, I know what they feel like now. Is there anyway that I can over come this and go back to having orgasms without using Zyban?
Answer: Zyban contains the same active ingredient as the antidepressant Wellbutrin. "It works by boosting the levels of several chemicals messengers in the brain."
Increased libido is listed as a potential side effect of Wellbutrin. There is the risk of seizures when using these drugs. This information was obtained from a Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) and can be found online, and at your local library and bookstore.
Since you experienced sexual dissatisfaction and inability to orgasm prior to using this medication, this indicates there is a potential medical cause. Please consult with your doctor, and demand that they check your hormone levels.
Here is some information on some of the hormones involved in clitoral engorgement and orgasm:
"Nitric Oxide is a "chemical" released by the nerves, blood vessels, and erectile tissues of the penis and clitoris.
"The cGMP mentioned prior is responsible for increased blood flow and tumescence, i.e., erection.
"At the same time that cGMP is being released, the enzyme phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE5) is also being released and it actually tries to stop the increased blood flow and tumescence. As long as cGMP is in sufficient quantities, increased blood flow continues. After orgasm, PDE5 takes control and blood flow returns to normal. Viagra works by suppressing PDE5. This means nitric oxide and cGMP must already be present in the body before Viagra can work.
"For these two chemicals to be present, L-Arginine must be present. L-Arginine is available over the counter in health food stores. It is usually sold in combination with yahimbine. Research is currently being done to see how effective they are, but the "initial results look promising."
This information is from the book For Women Only by Jennifer Berman, MD, and Laura Berman, Ph.D. (ISBN 0-8050-6405-2) I highly recommend this book to everyone. You can read more from this book on the page about Sexual Dissatisfaction in the Orgasm section of the website.
It is quite possible that you are ejaculating and not releasing urine. If you were suffering from incontinence, you would release urine when you coughed, sneezed, or laughed. Since it did not occur prior to your experiencing orgasm, I suspect you are ejaculating. There are women who release ejaculate, urine, or both. Since you obviously experienced some form of chemical change within your body, this may explain the difference in the type of fluid you release. Keep in mind that for some women, releasing urine during orgasm is normal and not something they have any control over.
